Itchy Pet Awareness Month
August 2, 2025

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, a time to highlight the common (but often overlooked) issue of itching in dogs and cats — and how to help them find relief!
Itching might seem like a minor nuisance, but it can be a sign of underlying health issues that deserve attention. Whether it’s due to allergies, parasites, infections, or even dry skin, chronic scratching can lead to discomfort, skin damage, and even behavioral changes in pets. No on likes to feel itchy!!!
Keep an eye out for these signs that your pet may be dealing with more than just a normal itch:
- Frequent scratching, licking, or chewing (especially paws, belly, or ears)
- Red, inflamed, or flaky skin
- Hair loss or bald patches
- Scabs or sores
- Ear infections or head shaking
- Changes in mood or behavior (restlessness, irritability)
Some tips to help your itchy pet:
- Check for fleas and ticks: use preventative treatments and check regularly.
- Keep up with bathing and grooming: Nootie Medicated Pet Shampoo and Pet Wipes are a staff favorite for helping our itchy pups.
- Monitor diet: Some pets develop food allergies or sensitivities over time. Try the UCARI At-Home Pet Intolerance Test for some insight, available at reTAIL!
- Try over the counter allergy supplement such as NaturVet Allergy Aid.
- Reduce environmental allergens: Clean bedding with no die/scent detergents, vacuum often, and wipe paws after walks – a staff favorite is Earth Rated Grooming Wipes.
- Talk to your veterinarian: Don’t wait – early diagnosis can prevent more serious problems!

Itchy skin can pop up any time of year, but with a little extra care, your pet will be feeling good no matter the season.
